Meet Brian

Brian Colón is a candidate for Lieutenant Governor of New Mexico. He resigned as Chairman of the Democratic Party of New Mexico in October after serving two and a half years. During his term as Chairman, Democrats picked up two Congressional seats, a United States Senate seat, six seats in the New Mexico State Legislature and carried New Mexico for President Obama. He managed a political, communications and field operation that helped Democrats achieve the most successful single election in modern New Mexico political history.

Colón, 40, is a lifelong New Mexico resident who grew up in Valencia County with one brother and one sister. His parents started and owned the Los Lunas flea market for a decade and Colón spent his childhood working afternoons and weekends at the family business.

He was the first in his family to attend college and graduated from New Mexico State University in 1998 after spending 10 years taking courses and starting a number of small businesses to pay his way through school. He then immediately entered the University of New Mexico School of Law and graduated in 2001.

Colón lives in Albuquerque with his wife of 13 years, Aleli, a middle school teacher in the Albuquerque Public School system. They have one 12 year-old son--Rafael.

Colón currently is a partner with Robles, Rael and Anaya, PC, where he has served as legal counsel for the State of New Mexico, and various counties, municipalities and small businesses in all corners of New Mexico.

Colón has been active in a number of philanthropic organizations across New Mexico including serving as a founder of Popejoy Hall's Board of Directors and he went on to chair that board for nearly five years. He has served with the Board of Trustees for the Albuquerque Community Foundation and its Future Fund. Colón has twice been appointed by Governor Richardson as a Commissioner for the Judicial Selection Commission.

In 2004, Colón was named Outstanding Young Lawyer of the Year by the New Mexico State Bar Association and one of New Mexico's Forty Under 40 Power Brokers by the New Mexico Business Weekly.
